Kazerne Dossin
On 15 August 1942 the German occupying forces conducted the first big raid against Antwerp Jews. The Antwerp police mobilised 50 police officers, who participated actively in the arrests. On that day, 845 Jews were arrested; a few days later, they were deported from Kazerne Dossin to Auschwitz.

The police reports of this raid and the next ones and the stories that were written down during those terrible days have inspired me to create this work for the Memorial. Families are chased away from their dining tables during dinner. Kettles keep simmering on the stove. Sometimes lights are left burning. Sometimes, the residents turned on the gas themselves, in order to escape arrest.
